Maulana Hasrat Mohani was born in 1878 in the middle class Sadaat family of Syed Azhar Hasan in a town Mohan in Unnao district, around 25 kilometers on the western side of Lucknow. His ancestors Syed Mahmood Nishapuri came from Nishapur and settled in Mohan.
